How Much Does Background Music for a Gym Cost? Pricing and Options
What does background music for a gym in Finland cost? See 2026 licensing fees, examples for different gym sizes and how to compare music services.
Prices checked on 27 October 2026.
The cost of background music for a gym in Finland includes the music service, the rights needed to play the music, and any equipment or installation costs. The service's monthly subscription fee may therefore tell only part of the story.
For example, Musiikkiluvat's 2026 price list puts the background music licence for 500 m² of customer space at €93.68 per month, excluding VAT. If a music service cost another €50 per month, the combined cost would be €143.68 per month before equipment costs. The €50 service fee is an assumption used for this example, not a quote or a market average.
What makes up a gym's music costs?
The music service
A music service provides a catalogue of music and a way to play it. When comparing services, check what is included: ready-made playlists, offline playback, customer support and the ability to play different music in different areas.
Ask for a price based on your setup. A service for a single space and a solution for several locations may be different subscription packages.
Music rights
Permission to use a music service and permission to play music publicly are separate matters. Musiikkiluvat sells a background music licence for gyms, priced according to the floor area of the customer spaces. The licence applies to an individual location.
Ask the provider to confirm in writing which rights its price includes and which you need to arrange separately. This gives you a clearer basis for comparing the total cost.
Equipment and installation
Your budget may also need to cover a playback device, amplifier, speakers, cabling and installation. If your gym already has a working sound system, first check whether it is compatible with the new service.
Separate one-off purchases from recurring fees. The first year may cost more even if the monthly subscription stays the same.
Cost examples: gyms with 200, 500 and 1,000 m² of customer space
The calculation below uses Musiikkiluvat's 2026 background music rates and the same hypothetical €50-per-month music service in each example.
All amounts exclude VAT. Floor area means the customer space used to calculate the licence fee. Annual costs assume 12 months of use.
| Customer floor area | Music licence / month | Example music service / month | Total / month | Total / year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 m² | €75.25 | €50.00 | €125.25 | €1,503.00 |
| 500 m² | €93.68 | €50.00 | €143.68 | €1,724.16 |
| 1,000 m² | €150.33 | €50.00 | €200.33 | €2,403.96 |
The licence fees include both the Teosto and Gramex components listed in the price schedule. The calculation excludes equipment, installation, group fitness classes and music used in online classes.

What about fitness classes and different music in different areas?
Make a distinction between general gym background music and music used during instructor-led classes when requesting a quote.
Musiikkiluvat offers a separate licence for instructor-led fitness classes with music. Its price depends on the number of weekly classes and the floor area of the exercise space. If classes are streamed online, the relevant streaming rights also need to be checked separately.
Playing different music in reception, the weights area and the stretching area also affects the technical setup. Ask whether separate music zones are included in the service and whether they require additional equipment. Having several speakers does not automatically mean you can choose a different playlist for each space.

What options do gyms have?
One option is a business music service with the necessary public performance licences arranged separately. In that case, include both charges in your comparison.
If another service says the necessary music rights are included in its price, ask for the details: which music, uses, locations and countries does the agreement cover? Also check whether it covers background music only or instructor-led classes as well.
The term “royalty-free music” alone does not explain all the conditions of use. Base your comparison on what the agreement actually covers.
A standard Spotify subscription is not an option for playing music publicly in a gym. Spotify restricts its service to personal, non-commercial use.

How to compare quotes
Give each provider the same information: customer floor area, number of locations, music zones, existing equipment and any group fitness classes.
Pay particular attention to:
- Total annual cost: the service, any separate licences, equipment and setup.
- Contract terms: minimum commitment, notice period and any activation fees.
- Reliability: what happens if the internet connection drops or the playback device restarts?
- Music suitability: listen to the playlists in your own gym before deciding.
- Staff workload: how easy is it to start the music and resolve problems?
Calculate the first year and subsequent years separately. A one-off setup fee can make a substantial difference to the first-year comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Does a music licence include the music itself?
A music licence grants permission for the uses covered by that licence. It is not itself a streaming service or a playlist library. You also need a source of music and must check its terms of use.
Can a gym use Spotify Premium if its music licences are paid?
No. Paying music licence fees does not change Spotify's terms of use. Spotify is intended for personal, non-commercial use.
Do the speakers need replacing when a gym switches music services?
Not necessarily. Check the connections on your existing equipment and the new service's hardware requirements. Ask for compatibility to be confirmed before ordering new equipment.
How can a gym reduce its music costs?
Compare total annual costs, keep compatible equipment and choose the features you need. Calculate any savings using your current invoices and the new quote, treating VAT consistently in both options.
