Can You Use a Personal Music Subscription in a Gym? A Guide for Gym Owners

Can you use a personal music subscription in a gym? Learn about business use, music rights and planning your gym's music setup in Finland with Vibeful.

Updated on 27 October 2026. This guide covers music use in gyms in Finland.

You can use a personal music subscription in a gym's customer areas only if the service's terms permit that use and the necessary music rights are in place. Paying for a subscription alone does not establish either.

As a gym owner, you need to know what your agreement covers, which music suits your gym and how playback will work day to day. Vibeful offers its own music for businesses through a subscription. This guide explains what to check before putting a music setup into use.

Why isn't paying for a music subscription enough?

The monthly fee tells you the price of the service. It does not automatically give you permission to play the music for business customers.

If a subscription is limited to personal listening, a separate public performance licence does not, by itself, extend the subscription to business use. Ad-free playback or the ability to download tracks also does not establish commercial-use rights.

Always check both the service's terms and the rights to use the music.

A music service and music rights are separate matters

The music service provides access to music and playback. Music rights determine how that music may be used.

Finland's Copyright Act protects, among other things, the right to make a work available to the public, including public performance. When planning music for a gym, the scope of those rights is therefore an important part of the agreement.

Ask for written answers to at least these questions:

What to checkWhat the answer should clarify
Intended useCan the music be played in a gym's customer areas in Finland?
Rights includedWhich rights are included in the price, and what needs to be arranged separately?
Spaces and locationsWhich locations and music zones does the agreement cover?
Group fitnessDoes the agreement cover instructor-led classes?
Online contentCan the music be used in live online classes or recordings?

Keep the terms and the answers with your other contract documents.

What about fitness classes and online sessions?

Describe each way your gym uses music separately. General background music, an instructor-led spin class and a workout video published online are different uses.

Do not assume that an agreement covering background music covers every other use. Explain your requirements as specifically as possible and ask for confirmation that they are included.

For example: “We need music in the weights area and reception, as well as for group fitness classes held on site. We do not currently publish classes online.”

Vibeful: original music for businesses

Vibeful is a subscription music service with its own catalogue created for businesses.

When planning to use Vibeful in your gym, start with the atmosphere you want. What suits a quiet morning? What works during a busy evening or a recovery session?

Also set out your practical needs:

  • Music: which styles and energy levels suit your customers?
  • Spaces: where will music play, and do different areas need different moods?
  • Equipment: which sound system and playback device does the gym already have?
  • Internet connection: is continued playback without internet essential for you?
  • Agreement: which uses do you need covered, and what is their total cost?

This information will help you establish how Vibeful fits your gym's operations.

How can you keep the feel of your gym's current music?

Identify what works in your existing playlists: rhythm, energy, musical style and how much singing you want. This gives you a useful starting point when exploring Vibeful's music.

For example, you might describe your requirements as: “In the morning, we want approachable pop and lighter electronic music. In the evening, we want workout music with a steadier beat and more energy.”

Listen through your gym's own speakers at the usual volume. Ask staff and customers how well the music fits the training environment.

How to plan your move to Vibeful

1. Map out your needs. List your locations, music zones, group fitness classes and any online sessions. 2. Confirm the agreement's scope. Check usage rights, any separate fees and the contract term. 3. Test the music and equipment. Try playback through your existing sound system before the full changeover. 4. Check reliability. If you need offline playback, confirm its availability and the conditions for your chosen device. 5. Brief your staff. Explain how to start the music, who is responsible for music choices and where to get help.

Agree on a changeover date once the necessary details have been confirmed. Check the cancellation terms of your old agreements as well.

Frequently asked questions

Can an instructor use their own phone to play music?

The device does not determine usage rights. Check that the service and music rights cover the class for your customers, and that the chosen device is suitable for playback.

Can a customer listen to their own music through headphones?

A customer's personal listening is different from the gym's shared background music. The customer needs to follow the terms of their own music subscription.

Should you cancel existing music licences when switching services?

Do not cancel them automatically. First check what the new agreement covers and what other music is used at the gym. Then confirm any necessary changes with your existing contract provider.

Where should you start when exploring Vibeful's music?

Start with one use, such as general gym background music. Listen at different times of day, then extend your plan to other spaces and situations.
